Exercise Instructor

Michelle Jermy - Exercise Instructor
I was born in Thetford, Norfolk and grew up with many friends and family around me. I gained access into the health and exercise industry from my love of sport and fitness. From a young age I participated in gymnastics and martial arts at a high level.
In 1999 whilst I was studying for my BSc in Sports Science I worked as a fitness instructor. As my studies progressed I gained an interest in adaptive exercise. In 2001 I was appointed Exercise Referral Co-ordinator for Breckland Council. In 2003 I qualified as a BACR Exercise Instructor which is when I was introduced to Upbeat, initially working Friday evenings.
In 2004 I was asked to run a day class in Bury St Edmunds and I worked Upbeat around my permanent lecturing position at the West Suffolk College. I taught on the Applied Science Courses; Foundation Degree Sports & Exercise Science, BTEC National Sports Science and BTEC National Health Science.

Over the years my interest to make exercise accessible for all has grown. I currently teach eight sessions for Upbeat during the day and remain on the rota for Friday nights. I decided to further my studies and recently enrolled to carry out research with Essex University into exercise adherence. I aim to complete my PhD in Sport and Exercise Medicine.

Upbeat is now my foundation for my research and with my own private company 1Life Training & Consultancy I am kept busy. Recently I have left the college to focus on my studies and expand the business. The business has three mains areas: Health and fitness qualifications, exercise referral consultancy and workplace health. I teach and assess on all the 1Life courses and workshops and deliver all other duties set out by a director.

People always question how I fit so much in? I am fortunate I have a job I love and I am passionate about, hence I enjoy what I do and find the time to balance family and work life.
In 2005 on New Year’s Day I unexpectedly gave birth to my son Jaden six weeks early. He has grown into a fine young man, my driving force. He is the most laid back easy going child but with a mummy with a schedule like mine, I thank God he is.

We recently crossed the border and moved to Stowmarket, Suffolk. Jaden attends a lovely school, we have developed some close supportive relationships and our new journey in a new location begins.

When I am not with my head stuck in a book, or my fingers glued to the laptop you will find me clowning around with Jaden. My chill time involves the gym or attending exercise classes, thankfully Jaden is an active child and follows suit with leisure activities. We also like our holidays in warm climates!
