(Committee Member)

I was born in Walthamstow, East London in 1935 and my brother Peter in 1940. I was old enough to remember vividly the bombing of London during the war years, and consider that we were very lucky to have survived it all. At sixteen I started a five year apprenticeship at the Royal Small Arms factory at Enfield Lock, which proved to be invaluable in later life.

A year after my apprenticeship I joined the Merchant Navy as an Engineer Officer. In 1960 whilst still in the Navy I married my dear wife and friend Sylvia. We had a son and daughter and now have two fine grandsons as well.

After leaving the Navy, I lived and worked in Harlow New Town as a Production Engineer for Standard Telephone & Cables. In 1965 I changed companies and location and worked for the Pye Group which became Phillips, as a senior Production Engineer and we bought a house in Hundon. In 1971 I was given the opportunity to become a partner and Managing Director of a small engineering company, and bought a bungalow in Sudbury, where we have been ever since. In the late eighties, I decided to work from home as an Engineering Consultant until 1996 when I retired.

In 2000 I was diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation and had to take strong medication to control it, resulting in having a Pacemaker implanted in 2003. Between these dates I was introduced to and joined Upbeat. In 2010 I was aware of becoming very breathless for very little effort and saw my GP. The outcome from this was a major heart operation at Papworth in 2012, followed seven days later by a replacement pacemaker. I have now recovered from this and feel that I can repay in some small way all the help and support that I have received from Upbeat over the years.
